Dr. Karen Lucas has taught two service-learning courses and reached 29 students through those offerings. The projects involved engaging teacher candidates in understanding Eureka math, a common core approach to teaching students, and assisting teachers in helping elementary students understand math concepts. The Eureka math style of teaching was different than what teacher candidates experienced in their early education. These projects give the teacher candidates an opportunity to gain understanding and provide assistance to current teachers. Since Eureka math now is widely used, it is important teacher candidates understand it.
