Maitland showed major engagement in her service-learning internship with the Conservation Department at Jekyll Island. She contributed to a variety of wildlife management, conservation, and education as well as demonstrating a rare level of independence while completing her internship. She developed a monitoring program for the Common Nighthawk and a field identification guide for fern species. Maitland's service-learning internship was also a life-changing experience, leading her to refocus her interests and career plans from marine biology to wildlife management more broadly.
