Abstract:
Our community focus was F.A.C.E.S Pre-K program. They were ages 4 and 5 years old. After an initial meeting with the students and teachers, we decided to educate them about healthy eating. We split our group into four stations – fruits and vegetables, grains and protein, dairy, exercise. We used a combination of coloring, games, and play to educate the children. The kids were excited about our presence and were very engaged. We were surprised at the amount of knowledge they already had. At the end of our presentation, the kids performed a dance taught to them to better help them understand the components of healthy eating. Our project incorporated the service-learning outcomes for this semester by allowing us to use our communication skills with this age group, practice health promotion for children of all cultural backgrounds, and meet their individual needs. By educating at a young age, we have helped facilitate a healthier lifestyle in their future.
