In the fall of 2018, Dr. Jennifer Hatchel began teaching service-learning courses. Since that time, she has reached 120 students though her service-learning work. Dr. Hatchel presented her experiences of integrating service-learning into her natural sciences course at both the 2020 Coastal Scholar’s Showcase and the 2020 Service-Learning Symposium. During the Symposium, Dr. Hatchel was awarded the 2020 Excellence in Service-Learning Outstanding Faculty Award.

"Dr. Hatchel is tireless in her creativity and ambition to serve our school and community.  Her service-learning with Mary Lee Clark Elementary School students is a result of her directing Kids in College Kamp in Camden, organizing and hosting a week of high-level activities for elementary and middle school students during the summer.  Even with current restrictions preventing on site visits to local public schools, Dr. Hatchel is still finding virtual ways for her Coastal Georgia students to reach out to Mary Lee Clark students. Her enthusiasm and will to not only innovate but see an idea through to its fullest potential is inspiring."
