Grandparent Connection: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (Video)

Authors: Kelsie Gamble, Joey Barker, Christine Michaud, and Angela Lavoie

Faculty Supervisor: Dr. Phillis George

Abstract (Poster):

As a group, we interviewed a couple of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, a parent who lost custody of their children, and a grandchild being raised by her grandparents. We  attended a Grandparent Connection public awareness dinner and met with the organization’s director to get information on program needs and clients. Our goal was to learn about the inaction of our community in efforts to address this emerging problem. After meeting with program staff, we learned one of their greatest needs was community awareness. So, we will use a service-learning mini-grant to place an ad in the Brunswick News to help bring awareness to the public.

Abstract (Video):

There are over 100,000 grandparents raising grandchildren in the state of Georgia alone. The organization Grandparent Connection (GC) is a vital program that serves these grandparents in various ways such as providing assistance with legal issues, finding financial resources, and medical information. GC also provides parenting classes and most importantly, moral support for both grandparents and grandchildren. Unfortunately, not all grandparents are aware of this wonderful organization. It is our goal to bring community awareness to this social problem and the organization that is part of the solution.
