Abstract:
The Well is a daytime service center for homeless and precariously-housed individuals in the local community. The facility, previously the Greyhound bus station in downtown Brunswick, has been remodeled to serve the needs of the target population. The Well provides access to showers, laundry, restrooms, internet, telephone, television, refreshments, and a sense of community. We started our service-learning project when The Well was still under construction. We facilitated in the demolition for the remodeling of the Greyhound bus station. We also placed several donation boxes in the community to collect materials needed for the center. Through this project, we gained an understanding of the complexities involved in building a nonprofit facility. We also learned the importance of flexibility within the field of human services.
