Learning Mathematics Through Football

Author: Dr. Laura Lynch

Abstract:

In Fall 2014, Dr. Lynch taught two sections of MATH 1001 Quantitative Skills & Reasoning:  one using the traditional style and one using service-learning.  The service-learning project had students visiting one of the three Boys & Girls Club middle school chapters in Glynn County once per week to run a fantasy football competition and to share the application of football to the topics being learning in MATH 1001 and in the middle school curriculum.  By running simultaneous sections, Dr. Lynch observed students who participated in the SL projects had more self-confidence (compared to the beginning of the semester), had higher success/passing rates, and had more enjoyment from class sessions compared to the traditional class.
