Abstract:

Our class teamed up with United Way of Coastal Georgia and Communities in Schools of Glynn County to provide tutoring for the High School Graduation Blueprint Project. While 69% of Glynn County’s overall student body currently graduates from high school on time, only 58% of economically disadvantaged students do so. The project uses a systematic data-driven method to identify 6th grade students at risk of dropping out of high school and provides students with school and home-based tutoring, mentoring, and family support services. One of the three prongs of the Blueprint Project involves providing individual tutoring for each sixth grade student in the program. Class members committed to offer one hour of one-on-one tutoring. Through this service-learning project, we have gained invaluable knowledge and experience that will serve us well in our future endeavors. We developed a better understanding of the various facets of nonprofit organizations. We also developed a deep understanding of the state of education in Coastal Georgia and the needs of the children and the community as a whole.
