Abstract: Through the SEA-PHAGES (Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science) two-semester long, discovery-based undergraduate research course, the novel, lytic bacteriophage, Karate, was discovered, isolated and sequenced. A genomic analysis revealed that Karate is 56428 base pairs (bp) long and contains 81 genes. The genome was analyzed in accordance with Gene-by-Gene refinement. The start site and function of Gene 51 were questionable and prompted further research. The start site was changed, and no function was determined .
