On February 3, 1971, an explosion at Thiokol Chemical in Woodbine, Ga., killed 29 workers and injured many more. First-responders, including police and fire departments and the military from Georgia and Florida, were involved in efforts to rescue survivors and extinguish the fire that also ignited surrounding forests. Hospitals throughout Georgia and Florida, and as far as Charleston, S.C., treated the injured.
