Jack McDevitt, is a local author who has achieved critical acclaim in the science fiction genre. He received an international Miquel Barceló UPC Science-Fiction Award for his novel, Ships in the Night in 1992; a Nebula Award for his novel, Seeker, in 2007; and, a John W. Campbell Memorial Award for his novel, Omega in 2004. McDevitt also is a recipient of a Robert Heinlein Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
McDevitt was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 14, 1935, but has lived in southeast Georgia with his wife, Maureen, for many years.
His papers are in the Special Collections & Archives at Northern Illinois University.
