October is Filipino American History Month, established in 1992 by the Filipino American National Historical Society. The month of October was chosen to commemorate the first recorded presence of Filipinos in what would become the United States of America.
Filipino sailors arrived in what is now known as Morro Bay in California, in October 1587, twenty years before the settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, was founded.
