The definition of a serial killer has several components. In addition to individual motivations, a serial killer has multiple victims, usually more than three. Unless an event occurs that prevents the killer from committing additional murders, a serial killer continues to kill and the typical victim is a stranger. Most serial killers kill alone.
Profiling is one one of the best known forensic sciences. The "mad bomber" and the psychiatrist who accurately profiled him both faded into history. Future serial killers learned from studying the case.
