Cover art for Pedagogy of the OppressedPedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire

ISBN: 0826412769  | Published in 2000

Pedagogy of the Oppressed completely changed my view of teaching. The text helps readers think about the power dynamics between teacher and student, and the author helps readers question the purpose of education. Readers cannot help but reflect on how they were taught and how they are currently teaching.

Freire's classroom experience is not transactional and passive; instead, it can be life-altering and powerful for students. He made me think about what a student-focused education really could mean.

If you looked at my classroom before I read this book and then after I read this book, the structure, content, and perspective would be totally different.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed is available at several schools in the University System of Georgia. Sign in to your GIL-Find account, submit a request and we will notify you when the book arrives.

Dr. Jennifer P. Gray teaches English at College of Coastal Georgia and serves as The Writing Center coordinator.
