Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is an added layer of security that requires you to present two or more pieces of evidence -- your credentials -- when accessing an account.
The evidence might be your username, password, plus a one-time code sent to your phone or email, for example, or your pre-enrolled device itself might be the evidence.
This extra step keeps people from accessing your account even if they know your password.
Organizations from online shopping sites to banks to patient medical portals are now requiring multi-factor or two-factor log-ins. Colleges and universities are now using MFA, too.
This guide provides information for downloading the Duo Mobile App and enrolling your smartphone or tablet for multi-factor authentication at College of Coastal Georgia.

A. You have the option to have codes sent to you through text which will allow you to log in.
Q. What if I do not have data and I cannot connect to Wi-Fi? How can I authenticate?
A. If you are using the DUO Mobile app, you can use the off-line codes; however, if your DUO account is set up only to send you texts, then you will not be able to access your account. At that point you will need to find a way to connect to Wi-Fi/data, or request a temporary bypass code from Technology Services.
Q. I don’t want to receive texts, or use the free DUO Mobile app.
A. Then you have the option to purchase a two-factor authentication device. They are typically $25 to $35 dollars and can be purchased on many online retailers' websites. While we cannot recommend specific authentication devices, as long as it is an MFA token, Yubikey, or any other FIDO certified authentication device you should be able to authenticate using that device.
Please note: at this time DUO does not support NFC, meaning that if you choose to use a multi-factor authentication key, you will not be able to sign into your CCGA applications on a mobile device.
Q. Will I need my phone every time I log into one of my college applications?
Q. I don’t have anything to hide on my account, there is no reason for me to have DUO mobile.
A. Even though you do not feel the additional security is necessary, it is required by the University System of Georgia.
Q. What if I lose my phone?
A. We can grant you a temporary, one-time use, bypass code to allow you to get into your account until you are able to purchase a new phone. There are scenarios where a multi-use code can be generated for a user; however, that will need to be approved by the ISO.
Q. DUO Mobile is an invasion of my privacy and I do not want it on my account.
A. DUO Mobile is, in fact, the opposite. It adds an extra level of security onto your account to ensure your data is safe from people who may try to get into your account. Signing up for DUO Mobile will only share the type of phone you use to enroll and the phone number you provide upon enrollment with approved technicians in Technology Services who have access to the DUO Mobile Admin panel? It does not share any other information with either the College of Coastal Georgia nor the University System of Georgia.
Q. What if I need to take an exam where I have to authenticate, but we are not allowed to have our phones?
A. Your professors are aware of DUO Mobile and how it works. They will need to sort the best way to allow students to authenticate and still take the exam.
Q. What if my parents need to get into my account?
A. You will have to approve the corresponding authentication method on the registered device if you choose to allow them to have access. If the student wishes to have the parent’s phone added to their DUO account, then the student will need to add the new device themselves using DUO’s Self-Service Portal. Technology Services is not able to assist parents or students with enrolling the parent’s device because it is a violation of our account security policy.
Q. Can I have more than one device associated with my DUO account?
A. Yes, you may have more than one device associated; however, only one device can be the default device.
You will need to have your phone (or two-factor key) with you any time you need to access your account.
For users who have registered with the DUO Mobile app, there are off-line codes found within the app in the event that your device does not have internet service.
If you change your phone or phone number, you will need to re-enroll in DUO Mobile.
