Dr. Mary McGinnis is teaching three service-learning courses in fall 2020. Her research focuses on multimodality, minority representation, and student empowerment. She has included service-learning in her Composition courses since 2005, predating her tenure here at Coastal Georgia. She’s received numerous awards and recognitions for her service-learning courses. Dr. McGinnis uses democratic practices in the classroom and allows students to take ownership of their coursework as they choose their own community partner and collaborate with that partner to create and implement their service-learning project. Her first service-learning course at the College was in the fall of 2019. Dr. McGinnis and her student have collaborated with a variety of community organizations ranging from community issues of hunger and anti-domestic violence to child and animal safety agencies. In this short time Dr. McGinnis has reached almost 100 students to foster engagement with organizations fighting critical issues in our community.

“Dr. McGinnis's service-learning courses help students learn about the types of writing required outside of college. These writing experiences empower students and show them that their voices can and do impact others. Students are able to share their ideas and positively contribute to their communities through the written or spoken word.”
