Abstract:
I had the opportunity to work with a small team of volunteers from Darien United Methodist Church in Darien, Georgia. This organization, led by Mrs. Lynn Poppell, helps provide elderly people with food during the pandemic. It invites members of the community to sign up and receive food for no cost, thereby helping many of the impoverished elderly in the area. The readings we have done in English 1102 along with this service-learning project have allowed me to better perceive the impacts of poverty in my community. It has allowed me to become more aware of the many ways poverty can affect a person, including the inability to purchase basic necessities such as food.
