Abstract:

Our service-learning group is educating members of our community about the risk factors and prevention regarding: hypertension, heart attack, and stroke. These medical conditions are very costly not only in terms of money spent for healthcare but also in the negative effects that these conditions have on the individuals burdened with the diagnoses. Our presentation defines each of the listed conditions and identifies both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors that are associated with the conditions. Then we educate our listeners about ways in which it is possible to take steps to modify their behavior in order to help prevent or lessen the effects of the condition. We also help to connect our research to the individual by listed some of the consequences of not taking action to prevent these conditions.
