Abstract:
Access to healthcare is a serious issue for all Americans especially the ones with the fewest resources. The group decided to help narrow the gap in health care services by going to a local homeless day shelter, The Well. There team members performed health assessments, provided education about various disease processes and methods of control, and referred at-risk patients to local low cost or free healthcare resources. The experience opened the group's eyes to the sheer number of people who are homeless in our county alone. The people that were helped had little. But, if the residents maintained or improved their health, the students made a difference. The group would like to see this project repeated every semester to ensure a continuum of care for this population.
